Yell ‘Brooksie’ at Bryson DeChambeau and fans risk the boot

Bryson DeChambeau

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan made it clear he has zero tolerance for fans attempting to get under the skin of polarizing star Bryson DeChambeau.

Without mentioning DeChambeau by name during the opening statement of his press conference ahead of the Tour Championship, Monahan cited the tour’s fan code of conduct program in saying those who harass players risk being kicked out of events.

“By coming to a PGA Tour event, you’re expected to contribute to a welcoming and safe environment by refraining from and reporting any unsafe, disruptive, or harassing behavior,” Monahan said Tuesday. “Comments or gestures that undermine the inclusive and welcoming nature of the game will not be tolerated, nor will any harassment of players, caddies, volunteers, officials, staff, or other spectators.”

Fans Inciting Bryson DeChambeau

Monahan’s comments came on the heels of a report that DeChambeau confronted a fan after losing to Patrick Cantlay in a six-hole playoff at the BMW Championship on Sunday.

According to a report by ESPN, a patron yelled “Great job, Brooksie” as DeChambeau walked to the clubhouse. It is a reference to the long-running feud between DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, and one that has been regularly directed at the player for the past few months.

Asked specifically if “Brooksie” would qualify as harassing behavior, Monahan said yes.

“The barometer that we are all using is the word ‘respect,'” Monahan said. “And to me, when you hear ‘Brooksie’ yelled or you hear any expression yelled, the question is, is that respectful or disrespectful?

“That has been going on for an extended period of time. To me, at this point, it’s disrespectful, and that’s the kind of behavior that we’re not going to tolerate going forward.”

Monahan said fans who are deemed to violate the code of conduct are subject to being expelled from the tournament. He referenced respecting not only the players but also other fans, many of whom attend events with children.

The feud between DeChambeau and Koepka dates back to 2020, but has ratcheted up over the past several months with both players taking repeated shots at each other through social media and interviews. The pair did agree to tone down the rhetoric as both will be members of the United States team taking on Europe at next month’s Ryder Cup.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker admitted it is highly unlikely DeChambeau and Koepka will be paired together at Whistling Straits, and Monahan acknowledged having conversations with both players.

His Own Worst Enemy?

DeChambeau enters this week’s Tour Championship as the third seed. He will begin the event three shots behind Cantlay and is being offered at +500 by DraftKings as he seeks his first FedEx Cup title.

DeChambeau is in that position thanks to his runner-up finish last week. He missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole to settle for a 60 on Friday, but maintained his reluctance to speak to certain members of the media during the event.

“I’ve talked to Bryson about a lot of things and obviously our preference would be to have him talking to the media,” Monahan said. “On a regular basis, and certainly in that instance when he has a historic performance.

“I’m hopeful that that will not be the case on a long-term basis, and I think that sometimes as hard as it is to contemplate and understand, I think human beings and individuals need some space, and I think that’s what’s going on right now.”
