R&A refutes report The Open Championship canceled

The fate of The Open Championship has not been determined.

The Royal & Ancient, which organizes and oversees the event, said Thursday all options remain on the table for one of golf’s four major tournaments as the sports world continues to adjust to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 Open is scheduled for July 16-19.

“We are continuing to work through our options for The Open this year, including postponement,” R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said in a statement Thursday. “Due to a range of external factors, that process is taking some time to resolve. We are well aware of the importance of being able to give clear guidance to fans, players and everyone involved and are working to resolve this as soon as we can.”

This year’s tournament is to be held at Royal St. George’s in Kent, England. Canceling now could save millions because of an insurance policy, and any deliberation could prove costly, according to Golf Digest, which reported Wednesday the R&A already decided to cancel.

The Masters, scheduled for April 9-12, has been postponed. So has the PGA Championship, which was to be held May 14-17 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. There also is great uncertainty around the U.S. Open, and all four of golf’s marquee events could be moved back or canceled.

A decision on the status of the U.S. Open, scheduled for June 18-21 at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, N.Y., could come any day.
