Five-star G Suggs commits to Gonzaga

Five-star guard Jalen Suggs announced his commitment to the Gonzaga Bulldogs but said playing overseas remains a “very serious” option.

The 6-foot-5 senior from Minneapolis revealed his decision Friday night on ESPN2, unzipping his jacket to reveal a “Zag Up” T-shirt.

“I think Mark Few is the best coach in the country,” Suggs said. “He’s got that winning mentality, just like I do. He’s a great competitor. What he does with his players and his point guards, I believe that going in there in that system that I can truly grow and develop as a player.”

Suggs is the highest-ranked recruit in Bulldogs history. He is rated No. 10 overall and No. 3 among combo guards in the Class of 2020 by the 247Sports composite. He is No. 6 overall in the ESPN 100, which also has him at No. 2 among point guards.

Suggs took his official visit to Gonzaga in early October. Minnesota, Florida, Florida State and Iowa State were also in his top five.

Suggs has won three gold medals with USA Basketball, winning championships at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup, 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup and 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.

A two-sport star at Minnehaha Academy, Suggs is also a four-star quarterback recruit but is expected to focus on basketball.

He confirmed that playing professionally overseas for one season before entering the NBA draft is still an option.

“That consideration is very serious,” he told ESPN2. “Me and my parents have been in talks with multiple teams overseas, trying to figure out contracts and stuff like that. But as of right now, I’m fully invested in the Zags and I can’t wait to get down there.”
