Veteran running back Marlon Mack will be among the cuts as the Houston Texans pare down their roster to get to the mandated 53 by the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline, ESPN reported.
Mack, 26, signed a one-year deal worth $2 million with Houston in the March after five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.
Mack was the primary backup to No. 1 tailback and rookie Dameon Pierce on the Texans’ depth chart. Rex Burkhead and Dare Ogunbowale are also on the depth chart. Burkhead was Houston’s leading rusher in 2021 with 427 yards.
Mack rushed 21 times for 90 yards in three preseason appearances.
Mack rushed for a career-best 1,091 yards with eight touchdowns in 2019 with the Colts. He has rushed for 2,484 career yards and 20 touchdowns in 47 games (23 starts) for the Colts. He also has 57 career receptions for 448 yards and two scores.
The Texans also reportedly released linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis; defensive tackles Demone Harris and Tre’Vour Wallace-Sims; defensive backs Terrence Brooks, Tristin McCollum, Grayland Arnold, Jakobi Francis and Kendall Sheffield; offensive linemen Jimmy Morrisey, Jordan Steckler and Max Scharping; tight ends Mason Schreck and Seth Green; quarterback Jeff Driskel; wide receivers Drew Estrada, and Connor Wedington; and fullback Paul Quessenberry.
