Yoan Moncada drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning and the visiting Chicago White Sox topped the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Saturday.
The White Sox scored twice in the 11th against Gregory Soto (2-9). Elvis Andrus had a bunt single to advance runner Seby Zavala to third. Moncada knocked in Zavala with a single. After a double steal, Andrus scored on Eloy Jimenez’s sacrifice fly.
Javier Baez had a two-out RBI single off Aaron Bummer in the bottom of the inning. Bummer then set down Spencer Torkelson on a liner to center to pick up his second save.
Liam Hendriks (4-4) was credited with the victory, while AJ Pollock knocked in two runs for the White Sox (75-71).
Scheduled starter Johnny Cueto was a late scratch due to a non-COVID related illness. Emergency starter Davis Martin, who was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, gave up just one run and three hits in six innings.
Tigers starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up two runs and two hits in 6 1/3 innings. Akil Baddoo scored two runs for Detroit (55-90).
Following an Andrew Vaughn leadoff single in the second, Rodriguez settled in. He retired the next 16 batters he faced.
Martin was nearly as effective keeping the Tigers off the board.
Tucker Barnhart led off the bottom of the sixth with a double. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Victor Reyes’ two-out single to right.
Jimenez was hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh, becoming Chicago’s first baserunner since the second inning. Vaughn and Yasmani Grandal then walked to load the bases and end Rodriguez’s stint.
Jason Foley replaced him and promptly gave up Pollock’s two-run single up the middle. Foley set down the next two batters to escape further damage.
With Kendall Graveman on the mound in the eighth, Baddoo drew a one-out walk and stole second. Riley Greene then smacked an infield single and Baddoo raced in from second with the tying run.
