Houston Astros third base coach Gary Pettis will miss Wednesday night’s opening game of the American League Championship Series due to an illness.
The Astros said that Pettis was not at Minute Maid Park for the contest against the New York Yankees.
Omar Lopez, normally the first base coach, will move to third base with Pettis sidelined. Quality coach Dan Firova will coach first base.
Pettis, 64, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September 2020 and returned to the Astros in July 2021.
Pettis was a five-time Gold Glove center fielder and stole 354 bases during an 11-year playing career for four teams from 1982-92. He is in his 28th season as coach, the last eight being with the Astros.
