Teofimo Lopez delays Kambosos fight after positive COVID-19 test

Unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez tested positive for COVID-19, pushing Saturday’s scheduled bout with George Kambosos in Miami back to Aug. 14.

“We send our best to Teofimo and his family and hope they get well soon, and look forward to seeing this epic battle on August 14, 2021,” event organizer Triller Fight Club co-founder Ryan Kavanaugh said Tuesday.

Lopez, 23, attended a fight in Las Vegas last weekend before returning to Miami to prep for his fight, according to ESPN.

Kambosos, 28, criticized Lopez for jeopardizing the fight in a statement posted to Twitter.

“Your actions and decisions have affected not only our fight but everyone involved in this fight,” he wrote, in part. “Pure irresponsibility on your side. Our time will come and I promise you and the world that I’m going to take you out worse than ever for everything.”

Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) holds the WBA, WBO, IBF and WBC belts and the Brooklyn-born boxer will be making his first title defense since his October 2020 upset of Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Australia’s Kambosos (19-0, 10 KOs) is the No. 1 contender.
