XFL roundup: McGloin gets Gladiators past Vipers

Matt McGloin padded for 182 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for a score, as the New York Guardians earned a 23-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Vipers on Sunday at East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the XFL debut for both teams.

Colby Pearson caught a 12-yard TD pass in the second quarter, Matthew McCrane added a 49-yard field goal and Jamar Summers returned a fumble 13 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter at MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL’s New York Jets and New York Giants.

Tampa Bay’s Aaron Murray passed for 231 yards, but threw two interceptions, while Vipers running back De’Veon Smith had 79 yards on 16 carries.

The Vipers had 394 yards of total offense, to 226 for the Gladiators, but were unable to find the end zone.

BattleHawks 15, Renegades 9

Jordan Ta’amu threw for 209 yards and one touchdown and Matt Jones ran for 85 yards as St. Louis kicked off its XFL season with a victory over Dallas in Arlington, Texas.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Renegades got on the board first with a 32-yard field goal from Austin MacGinnis after Johnathan Calvin recovered running back Christine Michael’s fumble near the end of the first quarter. MacGinnis later kicked field goals of 42 and 23 to give Dallas a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Keith Ford scored St. Louis’ first touchdown with a 16-yard dash around right end in the second quarter and the BattleHawks didn’t score again until Ta’amu’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Alonzo Russell in the fourth.

Philip Nelson threw for 209 yards with one interception for the Renegades, who were outgained 374 to 267. Dallas could only muster 58 yards rushing compared with 191 for St. Louis.
