What the Los Angeles Wildcats and Tampa Bay Vipers lacked in wins, they more than made up for in points on Sunday night.
Entering the game with matching 1-3 records, they combined for 75 points — the highest combined point total in the XFL thus far this season. But it was the host Wildcats who emerged victorious, holding on for a 41-34 win.
Quarterback Josh Johnson led the Wildcats (2-3) with 288 yards and four touchdowns through the air, completing 20 of 36 passes while also throwing an interception. He spread the ball around, too, connecting with nine different receivers.
Jordan Smallwood led L.A. with four receptions and 86 yards. He did not score, however, as four different Wildcats players each caught a score.
Taylor Cornelius threw for 300 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for Tampa (1-4).
Tampa scored the game’s first 17 points, and led 24-6 little more than halfway through the second quarter. But L.A. scored 27 straight points to take a 33-24 lead a minute into the fourth quarter. Tampa drew within three on an Andrew Franks field goal with 9:25 to play, but the Wildcats added another touchdown with 5:32 to play then withstood Tampa’s comeback attempt.
