Dylan Lesko, the top pitching prospect in ESPN’s 2022 MLB draft rankings, reportedly had Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
The right-hander from Buford High School near Atlanta had the elbow reconstruction procedure performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, ESPN reported Wednesday.
The draft is scheduled for July 17-19.
Lesko, who has committed to play at Vanderbilt, is ranked No. 8 overall by ESPN.
It’s not unheard of for injured pitchers to get drafted in the first round. The Washington Nationals selected Lucas Giolito 16th overall in 2012 and the Toronto Blue Jays picked Gunnar Hoglund 19th last year; both right-handers needed Tommy John surgery.
