The Baltimore Orioles acquired left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday for cash considerations.
Boston designated the 26-year-old reliever for assignment Friday to clear room on the roster after signing veteran infielder Justin Turner.
Hernandez struggled in 2022, going 0-1 with a 21.60 ERA in seven appearances. He walked eight and gave up four home runs in 6 2/3 innings.
He was 3-4 with a 5.06 ERA in 91 career games (one start) for Boston from 2019-22, striking out 133 batters and walking 73 in 85 1/3 innings.
To clear room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated infielder Lewin Diaz for assignment. Diaz, 26, batted .169 with five homers and 11 RBIs in 58 games with the Miami Marlins in 2022.
