The New York Rangers acquired Tyler Motte from the Ottawa Senators on Sunday in exchange for fellow forward Julien Gauthier and a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.
The trade was announced just minutes before the start of the Senators’ home game against the St. Louis Blues.
Per the Ottawa Sun, Motte was told to go home after he arrived at Canadian Tire Centre.
Motte, 27, has totaled nine points (three goals, six assists) in 38 games this season.
He did not record a point while playing in nine regular-season games with the Rangers during the 2021-22 season after being acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in March. However, he scored two goals while playing in 15 playoff games for the club.
Motte has 71 points (38 goals, 33 assists) in 307 career games with the Canucks, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Rangers and Senators.
Gauthier, 25, has nine points (six goals, three assists) in 40 games this season.
“Julien Gauthier is a hard-working, good skating winger with a big body who routinely goes to the opponent’s net,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said. “His north/south game should be a nice addition to our lineup.”
Gauthier has 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in 136 career games with the Carolina Hurricanes and Rangers. He was selected by the Hurricanes with the 21st overall pick of the 2016 NHL Draft.
