Sporting Kansas City coach and sporting director Peter Vermes signed a five-year contract extension through the 2028 season, the team announced Wednesday.
Vermes is beginning his 15th season as coach and has guided Sporting KC to 10 playoff appearances, including winning the 2013 MLS Cup. He ranks fourth in MLS history with 183 regular-season victories.
Vermes, 56, also has coached the franchise to U.S. Open Cup crowns in 2012, 2015 and 2017.
“Peter is a superlative strategic thinker who loves to win and hates to lose,” Sporting co-owner Mike Illig said in a news release. “He continuously demonstrates his commitment to our ownership’s objective to elevate Sporting KC as a perennial contender in a league that grows tougher and tougher every year.”
Vermes was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2013. He is the longest tenured coach in MLS history.
During his playing career, Vermes made 67 appearances for the United States Men’s National Team and played in the 1990 World Cup as well as the 1988 Olympics.
His playing career included a three-season stint when the franchise was known as the Kansas City Wizards (2000-02). He was named Defender of the Year and MLS Best XI in 2000.
Last season, Sporting KC missed the playoffs with a 11-16-7 record. The club kicks off the 2023 season on Saturday against the host Portland Timbers.
