Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov will have season-ending reconstructive surgery on Thursday to repair his right ACL.
Svechnikov, 22, sustained the injury in the Hurricanes’ 4-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday. In addition to missing the remainder of the regular season, Svechnikov will also be sidelined for the playoffs.
Carolina is currently 44-14-8, in first place in the Metropolitan Division and in second in the Eastern Conference.
“After further consultation with global experts in this field, it has been determined that the best course of action for Andrei’s future is to have this surgery, and to have it done by our team orthopedist, Dr. Marty Isbell,” Carolina general manager Don Waddell said in a statement. “We’re confident that Andrei will make a full recovery.”
Svechnikov had 55 points (23 goals, 32 assists) in 64 games this season.
In 347 career games, Svechnikov has 264 points (112 goals, 152 assists). He was selected by Carolina with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft.
