Jesus Ferreira lifts FC Dallas over Sporting KC, 2-1

Jesus Ferreira’s goal in the 84th minute lifted FC Dallas to a 2-1 win over visiting Sporting Kansas City on Saturday in Frisco, Texas.

Alan Velasco also scored for Dallas, which improved to 2-1-1, while Daniel Salloi scored for Kansas City (0-2-2), which remained winless through four games.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Dallas pulled even in the 55th minute.

Velasco found Sebastian Lletget near the top of the penalty box, but instead of taking the shot, Lletget passed it immediately back to Velasco, who ripped a shot into the far corner of the net past John Pulskamp.

Kansas City had a golden opportunity to retake the lead in the 61st minute when it was awarded a penalty kick when Dallas goalie Maarten Paes tripped William Agada.

Paes initially denied Agada’s penalty shot by diving to his left, but his save was nullified because VAR determined he left the goal line before the shot. Paes promptly dove to his right to bat Erik Thommy’s penalty shot out of play.

The missed opportunity proved costly for Kansas City later in the half.

Dallas completed its rally when Paul Arriola intercepted an errant clearing pass and slid a pass along the right wing to Geovane Jesus, who whipped a crossing pass into the goal area.

Ferreira got his foot on it, but Pulskamp deflected the shot a few feet away, enabling Ferreira to pounce on the rebound and put it in the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Kansas City appeared to have a chance to tie the game in the 90th minute when it was initially awarded a penalty shot, but the penalty on Paes was overturned on VAR.

Dallas, which had possession for 51.3 percent of the game, outshot Kansas City 12-11, with each side putting just three shots on target.

Paes had two saves for Dallas, while Pulskamp had one for Kansas City.

Kansas City scored its first goal of the season in the 11th minute when Salloi’s blast from near the top of the penalty box caught Paes flat-footed and dipped just under the crossbar.
