Report: Gary Trent Jr. picks up $18.5M option

Toronto Raptors winger Gary Trent Jr. picked up his player option worth $18.5 million for the 2023-24 season, Turner Sports reported Tuesday.

Trent and the team are committed to working out a long-term deal, per the report.

Trent, 24, averaged 17.4 points per game this past season, the club’s third-leading scorer. He added 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 66 games (44 starts). Trent finished tied for third in the NBA with 1.6 steals per game, which was third on his own team behind O.G. Anunoby (1.9) and Fred VanVleet (1.8).

VanVleet declined his option last week and will become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Trent is averaging 14.4 points in 270 career games (160 starts) for the Portland Trail Blazers (2018-21) and Raptors. He was traded to Toronto in March 2021 in the deal that sent Norman Powell to Portland.

Trent was selected in the second round of the 2018 draft by Sacramento and dealt to Portland in a draft-night trade.
