Reports: J.D. Arteaga to be named next Miami baseball coach

Miami athletics Hall of Famer and pitching coach J.D. Arteaga will be named the next Hurricanes baseball coach, multiple outlets reported Monday.

He would replace Gino DiMare, who stepped down earlier this month after five seasons.

Arteaga, 48, has been on the coaching staff for the past 21 years under DiMare and Jim Morris, serving as pitching coach since 2003.

Arteaga pitched for Miami from 1994-97 and remains the school’s all-time leader in wins with 43. He was inducted into the Miami HOF in 2007 and had his No. 33 retired in 2003.

Arteaga was drafted by the New York Mets in the 26th round in 1997 but never made it to the big leagues. He went 46-34 with a 3.40 ERA in 172 minor league games and retired after the 2002 season at age 27.

DiMare, 53, left with a 168-86 mark in five seasons and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
