Revolution sign U.S. midfielder Ian Harkes

The New England Revolution signed U.S. midfielder Ian Harkes on Wednesday.

Harkes, 28, is signed through the end of this season with club options for 2024 and 2025.

He played for D.C. United from 2017-18 and returns to MLS after five years at Scotland’s Dundee United.

The Revs acquired the United’s right of first refusal to sign Harkes in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick and a conditional $50,000 in 2025 general allocation money.

“Ian Harkes is a welcomed addition to our team. His experience in Scotland has allowed him to grow as a player, and he will offer us depth and quality to our midfield,” said Revolution sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena. “We look forward to integrating Ian into the team over the next couple of weeks.”

Harkes had two goals and two assists in 33 MLS matches (26 starts) with D.C. United. He had five goals and eight assists in 84 matches in the Scottish Premiership.

Harkes’ father, John, played for the Revs from 1999-2001. They are the first father-son duo in franchise history.
