Leagues Cup roundup: CF Montreal defeats Pumas on penalty kicks

Mathieu Choiniere scored in regulation and again on a penalty kick in host CF Montreal’s victory over Pumas UNAM on Saturday.

The match between teams in East 2 of the Leagues Cup bracket finished in regulation at 2-2 before Montreal won on penalty kicks 4-2. Rudy Camacho, Gabriele Corbo and Lassi Lappalainen added penalty-kick goals for Montreal, and Bryce Duke also scored in regulation as his team built a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Gabriel Fernandez scored in the 88th minute of regulation for Pumas, and Emanuel Montejano knotted the match in the first minute of second half stoppage time. Fernandez and Cesar Huerta converted their penalty kicks.

Pumas took 13 shots in regulation, but only three on goal. Four of Montreal’s eight shots were on goal. Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois and Pumas counterpart Gil Alcala finished with one save apiece.

Red Bulls 0, Revolution 0 (Red Bulls win 4-2 on penalty kicks)

Host New York scored on four straight penalty kicks to defeat New England in the East 4 matchup.

After Carles Gil gave the Revs a 1-0 lead on their first penalty kick, Daniel Edelman scored for the Red Bulls. Gustavo Bou immediately gave New England the lead again at 2-1 but New York scored on its next three attempts. Dante Vanzeir, Sean Nealis and John Tolkin all tallied.

The Red Bulls fired 11 shots (three on goal) to seven (two on goal) for the Revs in regulation. The possession mark slightly favored New England, 51.7-48.3 percent.

The Revs’ Djordje Petrovic made three saves, and Carlos Coronel had two for the Red Bulls.

Union 3, Tijuana 1

Julian Carranza scored two goals after teammate Daniel Gazdag converted a penalty kick as host Philadelphia beat Tijuana in their East 1 matchup. Carlos Gonzalez tallied for Tijuana.

The Union dominated throughout, maintaining possession 61.5 percent of the time, and peppered the visitors with 17 shots on goal among their 27 overall. Tijuana managed five shots on target and 14 overall.

Antonio Rodriguez made 11 saves for Tijuana, and Union keeper Andre Blake finished with four.

Carranza drew a foul on Tijuana’s Nicolas Diaz in the penalty area in the 18th minute, and Gazdag scored on a penalty kick in the 21st minute with a right-footed shot to the center of the goal. Carranza scored from close range five minutes later.

Gonzalez scored just out of halftime to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Carranza’s second goal in the 71st minute gave the Union some breathing room.
