Dante Vanzeir recorded a brace to single-handedly lift the New York Red Bulls to a 2-1 victory over Atletico San Luis on Sunday night in an East 4 Leagues Cup match in Harrison, N.J.
Vanzeir scored in the 56th minute before breaking a 1-1 tie by sending a left-footed shot past San Luis goalkeeper Diego Urtiaga in the second minute of second-half stoppage time. John Tolkin picked up an assist on Vanzeir’s decisive tally.
Jhon Murillo found the back of the net in the 69th minute for San Luis, which will not advance to the knockout stage. Urtiaga finished with four saves, as did New York goalie Carlos Coronel.
Elias Manoel scored just minutes after Vanzeir’s second goal to ice the match, but VAR decision overturned the play, giving San Luis a chance to look for an equalizer. But the visitors never attempted another shot.
Atlas 1, Toronto FC 0
Jordy Caicedo scored in the second minute and Atlas held on to beat host Toronto in an East 3 match.
Atlas’ Camilo Vargas made six saves to keep Toronto FC off the board. Atlas and New York City FC will be the two squads from East 3 advancing to the next round.
Toronto racked up 13 shots and put six on goal, but it could never break through against Vargas. Kosi Thompson gave the hosts one last chance to score in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time, but his header from the center of the box was saved.
Queretaro 1, Tijuana 0
Emanuel Gularte scored in first-half stoppage time to propel Queretaro past Tijuana in an East 1 match in Chester, Pa.
Gularte scored in the first minute of first-half extra time, putting a header into the bottom left corner of the net following a corner. The tally came shortly after Raul Sandoval’s shot was blocked — a play that set up the corner.
Despite taking the loss, Tijuana still finished with a comfortable advantage in shots (16-9) and shots on target (5-2). Fernando Tapia earned the clean sheet for Queretaro.
