Denis Shapovalov (knee) withdraws from U.S. Open

Denis Shapovalov announced his withdrawal Wednesday from the U.S. Open due to a lingering knee injury.

Ranked No. 22 in the world, the 24-year-old Canadian has not played since losing in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon on July 9.

“Despite doing everything possible to be 100% healthy in time for [the U.S. Open], my knee needs more time and sadly I have to withdraw,” Shapovalov posted on Twitter. “That grand slam energy, especially in NYC, is unlike anything else and I’m really going to miss playing in front of the amazing fans there this year!”

The left-handed Shapovalov advanced to the quarterfinals in 2020 for his best finish at the U.S. Open. He fell in the third round in both 2021 and 2022.

Shapovalov won his only ATP Tour singles title to date at the Stockholm Open in 2019. He is a five-time ATP runner-up.
