Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton is “fighting for her life” in the intensive care unit as she battles a rare form of pneumonia, her daughter wrote on social media Tuesday.
Per a Spotfund campaign set up by her daughter McKenna Lane Kelley, Retton “is not able to breathe on her own” and has been in the ICU for more than a week.
“Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not disclose all details. However, I will disclose that she not insured,” Kelley wrote.
“We ask that if you could help in any way, that 1) you PRAY! and 2) if you could help us with finances for the hospital bill.”
Retton, 55, captured five medals (one goal, two silver, two bronze) at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She made history by becoming the first American woman to win gold in the individual all-around competition.
