Georgetown women’s coach Tasha Butts dies at 41

Georgetown women’s basketball coach Tasha Butts died Monday after a battle with breast cancer. She was 41.

Butts was hired to lead the Hoyas in April but stepped away from the team last month.

Before joining Georgetown, the Tennessee product played one season for the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx in 2004 and worked as an assistant coach at Duquesne (2007-08), UCLA (2008-11), LSU (2011-19) and Georgia Tech (2019-23). She was promoted to associate head coach of the Yellow Jackets in 2021.

“I am heartbroken for Tasha’s family, friends, players, teammates and colleagues,” Georgetown athletic director Lee Reed said in a news release. “When I met Tasha, I knew she was a winner on the court, and an incredible person whose drive, passion and determination was second to none. She exhibited these qualities both as a leader and in her fight against breast cancer.

“This is a difficult time for the entire Georgetown community, and we will come together to honor her memory.”

Darnell Haney will serve as the Hoyas’ interim head coach for the 2023-24 season. Georgetown opens the season at home against Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 6.
