Cardinals sign QB Jeff Driskel to practice squad

The Arizona Cardinals brought back Jeff Driskel as an insurance policy at quarterback, signing the veteran to their practice squad on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Driskel, one of four practice squad signings by the team, will presumably be the backup to rookie Clayton Tune this Sunday at Cleveland.

The Cardinals announced Monday that Tune would get the start, though it’s unclear if they plan to activate Kyler Murray off the PUP list ahead of the game. The team has until next Wednesday to add Murray to the 53-man roster or shut him down for the rest of the season.

The Cardinals signed Driskel to their practice squad at the conclusion of training camp but released him Oct. 20. They’re bringing him back after trading Joshua Dobbs to Minnesota earlier this week.

Arizona also re-signed WR Andre Baccellia and WR Daniel Arias to the 16-player squad and signed RB Hassan Hall.

Wednesday’s moves follow a slew of moves from Tuesday, including the Cardinals placing WR Jeff Smith and RB Damien Williams on practice squad injured reserve. They also cut DL Jacob Slade and CB Quavian White.

Driskel, an NFL reserve since being drafted by the 49ers in the sixth round in 2016, has played in 23 games and sports a 1-9 record as a starter playing for the Bengals (2018), Lions (2019), Broncos (2020) and Texans (2021-22).

Tune will be making his first pro start against the Browns. The fifth-round pick appeared in one game this season, completing one pass for 4 yards on a failed fake punt attempt against Seattle.
