Daniel Sprong powers Red Wings past Blue Jackets

Daniel Sprong scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period to lift the host Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday afternoon.

Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, Robby Fabbri and defenseman Jake Walman also scored and Ville Husso made 18 saves for Detroit.

Columbus’ Patrik Laine, who missed the previous nine games due to a concussion, scored his 200th career goal in the third period.

Alexandre Texier, rookie Adam Fantilli and Sean Kuraly also scored and Spencer Martin made 23 saves for the Blue Jackets.

The Wings came out flying, as they scored twice in the first 4:26 of the first period.

J.T. Compher won a battle for a loose puck from behind the Blue Jackets’ goal line. He passed the puck to Raymond, who faked going around the net and then jammed the puck into the short side.

Fabbri scored off a behind-the-net pass from Christian Fischer, who retrieved a shot from Jeff Petry.

Texier scored his second goal of the season at 5:33 of the period to get Columbus on the board. Texier got behind the Detroit defense and converted on a breakaway after Damon Severson’s lead pass.

Columbus tied it late in the period on a 3-on-2 break. Kirill Marchenko fired a shot that bounced off the back boards, allowing Fantilli to tuck the puck past Husso.

Kuraly’s goal at 5:41 of the second period gave the Blue Jackets a 3-2 lead. Kuraly slipped past a defender at the blue line and ripped a shot from the left side following a feed from Zach Werenski.

DeBrincat knotted the score with four minutes left in the second after one-timing a shot off a Petry feed.

Sprong took advantage of a Columbus turnover in its own zone and whistled a shot past Martin’s glove with 1:41 remaining in the period.

Walman was credited with a goal at 2:33 of the third period after his shot from the point found its way home.

Laine made it a one-goal game with a wrist shot from the right circle with 8:30 left.
