Drake Batherson collected one goal and one assist to lead the host Ottawa Senators to a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames and snap a five-game home losing skid.
Mathieu Joseph, Rourke Chartier and Travis Hamonic also scored for the Senators, while Tim Stutzle collected two assists. Goaltender Joonas Korpisalo made 24 saves.
Blake Coleman replied with Calgary’s lone goal. Dustin Wolf, the reigning AHL most valuable player and two-time AHL goaltender of the year, stopped 34 shots in his first NHL game of the season, and second in his career. Calgary’s number-one goalie Jacob Markstrom has missed two games due to an undisclosed injury.
The teams were trading chances from the drop of the puck and Joseph opened the scoring at the 11:21 mark. Jake Sanderson worked along the blueline before sending a high-point shot that Joseph deflected into the cage for his fourth goal of the season.
Batherson’s power-play goal at 3:07 of the second period doubled the Ottawa lead. A point shot hit Brady Tkachuk in front of the Calgary net and Batherson batted the puck out of the air for his fourth of the season.
Coleman finally put the Flames on the board with 4:08 remaining in the second period. Martin Pospisil led the charge on a two-on-one rush and slipped across a pass that Coleman converted for his fourth of the campaign.
However, the Senators pulled away for good with a pair of goals 82 seconds apart early in the third period. Rourke Chartier extended the lead when Batherson stripped Nikita Zadorov of the puck at the end boards and Dominik Kubalik’s quick pass set up Chartier’s wide-open tally. Chartier’s last NHL goal was Oct. 28, 2018.
Then, Hamonic was set up in the high slot and his one-timer found the mark for his first of the campaign, which snapped a 19-game drought.
The struggling Flames mustered only two shots on goal in the third period.
