Morgan Frost, Flyers end Kings’ point streak

Morgan Frost scored two goals and Cal Petersen made 35 saves as the visiting Philadelphia Flyers snapped the Los Angeles Kings’ eight-game point streak with a 4-2 victory on Saturday night.

Owen Tippett had a goal and an assist and Cam Atkinson also scored for Philadelphia, which completed a sweep of a Southern California back-to-back that began with a 6-3 victory at Anaheim on Friday. Sean Walker added two assists.

Petersen, who picked up his first win of the season, was making just his second start after Carter Hart was a late scratch for the second straight night with an illness.

Adrian Kempe and Carl Grundstrom each scored for Los Angeles, which lost for the sixth time in seven home games (1-3-3). Cam Talbot, who shut out the Flyers a week earlier in Philadelphia, finished with 22 saves as the Kings suffered their first regulation loss in nine games (6-1-2).

Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead at the 14:59 mark of the first period on a breakaway goal by Tippett, whose backhand shot slid under Talbot’s right arm and trickled over the goal line for his fifth goal of the season.

The Flyers extended their lead to 3-0 in the second period on Frost’s first two goals of the season. The first came at the 6:26 mark when he skated around the net and whipped a sharp-angle wrist shot from the right side of the crease that deflected off defenseman Jordan Spence and then Talbot’s shoulder and into the goal. The second came with 3:30 left in the period came on a deflection in front of the net of a Nick Seeler one-timer.

The Kings cut it to 3-1 at the 18:06 mark when Grundstrom, playing in his 200th NHL game, fired a wrist shot from above the circle through the legs of Walker and under Petersen’s left arm for his sixth goal of the season.

Atkinson made it 4-1 midway through the third period when he tapped in a Sean Couturier pass from the low slot for his eighth goal. Kempe answered less than three minutes later with his fifth goal in six games when he redirected a Quinton Byfield pass inside the back post.
