Georgetown halts late rally to defeat Mount St. Mary’s

Dontrez Styles scored a career-high 26 points and Georgetown defeated visiting Mount St. Mary’s 83-72 on Saturday at Washington D.C.

Styles was 8 of 15 from the field and added eight rebounds for the Hoyas, who led by double digits most of the way and held off a late-game rally by the Mountaineers.

Jay Heath and Supreme Cook each scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Georgetown (2-2).

De’shayne Montgomery led Mount St. Mary’s (1-2) with 17 points, while Dakota Leffew and Dola Adebayo each added 14 points. Dallas Hobbs had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers.

The Hoyas led 43-31 at halftime and Styles made one of two free throws to put Georgetown up 57-41 with 14:10 remaining.

Montgomery’s pull-up jumper with 12:44 remaining got the Mountaineers within 12 and Joshua Reaves three-pointer cut the deficit to 61-50 at the 11:37 mark, but a back-door layup and free throw by Styles pushed the lead back to 14.

Heath’s corner 3-pointer increased the lead to 16 points with 6:26 remaining.

A layup by Hobbs pulled Mount St. Mary’s within 75-64 with 3:41 left before three free throws and Adebayo’s put back capped a 10-1 run that cut the deficit to 76-69 with 3:14 left.

Heath hit two free throws and Cook converted an alley-oop dunk to push the lead back to 11 with 1:47 remaining.

The Hoyas jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and were up 13-2 after Heath’s driving layup at the 15:57 mark.

Mount St. Mary’s rallied and pulled within 16-12 on Montgomery’s fast-break layup off a Georgetown turnover, however Jayden Epps scored five quick points for the Hoyas.

Wayne Bristol, Jr.’s second-chance layup sparked a 10-0 run capped by Epps three-pointer and the Hoyas led 36-19 with 7:01 remaining in the first half.

An 8-2 Mountaineers run cut the deficit to nine and Georgetown led by 11 at intermission.
The Hoyas shot 51.5 percent (17 of 33) from the field in the first half while the Mountaineers were at 44.1 percent (15 of 34).
