Five-goal third period sends Stars past Rangers

Roope Hintz had a goal and two assists and the Dallas Stars scored five third-period goals in a 6-3 win over the visiting New York Rangers on Monday.

The loss ended New York’s 11-game points streak (10-0-1), tied for the 10th-longest run in franchise history.

Mason Marchment, Tyler Seguin and Joe Pavelski each had a goal and an assist for the Stars. Jamie Benn and Sam Steel scored Dallas’ other goals. Stars goalie Scott Wedgewood stopped 30 of 33 shots for his fourth win in five games this season.

The three-point night ended a modest slump for Hintz, who had only two points (one goal, one assist) in his previous seven games.

Kaapo Kakko, Barclay Goodrow and Vincent Trocheck scored for the Rangers, while Jacob Trouba had two assists.

New York goalie Igor Shesterkin made 30 saves.

Dallas is 5-1-0 in its past six games, with the one loss a 6-3 setback to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday after the Stars held a 3-0 lead. The Stars rebounded from the tough defeat with a big comeback of their own on Monday.

After Kakko gave New York a 2-0 lead at 13:38 of the second period, the Stars quickly responded 45 seconds later on a great three-on-one passing play finished by Benn’s fourth goal of the season.

Pavelski’s team-leading eighth goal equalized the score one minute into the third period. Marchment’s power-play tally put the Stars ahead at the 7:06 mark of the final frame, but not after some controversy.

Marchment deposited a loose puck in front of New York’s net, but the play was immediately waved off due to alleged goaltender interference. Dallas challenged the call, and the goal was awarded when video review revealed no contact was made between Marchment and Shesterkin.

Seguin added to the Stars’ lead at 8:24 of the third period, getting credit for the goal after a scramble in front of New York’s net. The Rangers made a goaltender interference challenge of their own, to no avail.

New York went on a power play late in the third period and pulled Shesterkin for a five-on-three advantage, but Steel and Hintz each scored short-handed, empty-net goals.

Goodrow sliced the final deficit when he scored with 16 seconds remaining.
