Blues break through in shootout, defeat Hurricanes

Brayden Schenn converted in the fifth round of the shootout to give the St. Louis Blues a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Nathan Walker had the Blues’ regulation goal to open the scoring. St. Louis has won two games in a row and five of its last seven, and is 17-1-0 when scoring first this season.

Teuvo Teravainen scored for Carolina, which had a five-game winning streak snapped. Antti Raanta stopped 21 shots as Carolina opened a season-long six-game homestand.

Jordan Binnington made 29 saves, including two in overtime, for the Blues.

Each team scored in the fourth round of the shootout, first by Carolina’s Sebastian Aho and then Jake Neighbours of the Blues.

The best overtime scoring chance came from St. Louis winger Brandon Saad, who was in front of the net but denied by Raanta about midway through the session.

The Hurricanes outshot St. Louis 28-19 through regulation.

Walker’s first came in just his second NHL game of the season. He had a clear path to the net after Carolina defenseman Dmitry Orlov failed to knock down a puck that was high in the air.

Teravainen, who was without a point in the previous five games, was the first to control the puck off an offensive-zone faceoff on a power play, delivering his 14th goal of the season off an assist from Jack Drury. The Hurricanes have at least one power-play goal in seven consecutive games.

The teams combined for 20 shots on goal — 13 by the Hurricanes — in a scoreless second period. Carolina, which scored five goals in the third period a night earlier at Washington, didn’t record a shot in the first 10 minutes of the third period.

Raanta was in just his second NHL game since Dec. 15.

The Hurricanes, who were fresh off a 3-0-0 road stretch, played the first of 11 out of 12 games at home.
