Spencer Jones’ long-range shooting lifts Stanford over Washington

Spencer Jones established career highs of 30 points and eight 3-pointers to lead host Stanford to a 90-80 victory over Washington in Pac-12 play on Saturday night.

Kanaan Carlyle scored 16 points as the Cardinal (10-8, 5-3 Pac-12) won for the fifth time in seven games. Brandon Angel and Michael Jones added 13 points apiece.

Keion Brooks Jr. recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds for Washington (11-8, 3-5). Moses Wood tallied 18 points, Wilhelm Breidenbach added 12 points and 10 rebounds, Sahvir Wheeler also scored 12 points and Paul Mulcahy had 10.

The Cardinal were a solid 13 of 24 from behind the arc as Spencer Jones missed just four of his 12 long-range attempts. Overall, Stanford shot 50.9 percent while beating the Huskies for the seventh time in the past nine meetings.

Washington made 48.3 percent of its shots, including 7 of 21 from 3-point range.

Spencer Jones scored 22 points in the second high to fuel the Cardinal attack, which reached 90 or more points for the fourth time this season.

Stanford led 48-39 after a basket by Angel with 16:30 remaining, before Mulcahy scored five points during a 7-0 run as the Huskies moved within two with 15:08 remaining.

Spencer Jones responded with three treys in 80 seconds during a 9-3 burst that saw the Cardinal hold a 57-49 advantage with 13:11 remaining.

Angel sank two free throws to make it 63-53 with 10:35 left in the game.

Washington answered with a 10-1 surge, with Brooks converting a three-point play to cut the Stanford lead to 64-63 with 7:47 remaining.

Spencer Jones buried another 3-pointer 45 seconds later to give Stanford a four-point edge.

The Huskies were within two, but Spencer Jones drilled another trey to give Washington a 74-69 lead with 5:14 left.

Spencer Jones later scored four points in a 35-second span as the Cardinal took a 79-71 lead with 2:48 remaining.

Two free throws by Michael Jones made it 90-76 with 1:01 left as Stanford closed it out.

Michael Jones and Spencer Jones each had eight points in the first half as Stanford led 39-31 at the break. Breidenbach had eight in the half for Washington.

The Cardinal created distance with an early 14-2 burst. Andrej Stojakovic capped it with a 3-pointer to give Stanford a 22-9 lead with 12:40 left in the half, and the Cardinal maintained the lead for the rest of the game.
