Streaking Bruins pull away for victory over Jets

Charlie Coyle scored the game-winning goal and added an assist while Jeremy Swayman made 12 of his 22 saves in the third period as the Boston Bruins defeated the visiting Winnipeg Jets 4-1 on Monday night.

Coyle’s goal with 1:34 left in the opening frame began a three-goal run to close the game for Boston, which earned its fifth win in a row. The Atlantic Division-leading Bruins are 6-0-3 in their past nine games.

Coyle’s 17 goals mark a career high since he joined the Bruins during the 2018-19 season.

Jakub Lauko, Jake DeBrusk and Brad Marchand rounded out Boston’s scoring. Morgan Geekie added two assists.

DeBrusk has eight goals and 14 points over his past 14 games.

Vladislav Namestnikov scored the lone goal and Connor Hellebuyck made 17 stops for Winnipeg, which had not allowed more than three goals in its previous 34 games. That was tied for the sixth-longest streak in NHL history.

The Jets had won 10 of their previous 11 games.

The Bruins got the scoring going just 2:20 into the first period. Lauko scored his second goal in a three-game span, burying a nifty Trent Frederic feed around Hellebuyck and through the top of the goal crease.

Namestnikov provided a quick response for the visitors at 4:16, deflecting a Dylan DeMelo one-timer past Swayman. Nikolaj Ehlers dropped the puck back to the point to start the play.

Coyle tipped in Hampus Lindholm’s wrister from the center point for the game-winner late in the first.

Winnipeg managed only four shots in the second period and 10 total through 40 minutes. Swayman made a strong save on Nate Schmidt’s drive late in the middle frame.

Swayman flashed his pad to deny Ehlers on the rush early in the third as the Jets matched their second-period shot total before the 3:00 mark. Dylan Samberg also hit the left post with a wrister nearly halfway through the frame.

Against the run of play, DeBrusk charged to the net front and slammed home a short-handed insurance goal to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead with 5:25 left in regulation.

Coyle set up Marchand for an empty-netter with 55 seconds to go.
