Kraken pour it on early, fend off Jackets

Jordan Eberle scored two goals, both on the power play, and added an assist as the Seattle Kraken defeated the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 on Sunday night.

Jared McCann added a goal and an assist and Brandon Tanev added an empty-netter with 13 seconds remaining for the Kraken, who extended their point streak to three games (2-0-1) and moved within two points of a wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Oliver Bjorkstrand had two assists and goaltender Joey Daccord made 30 saves.

Yegor Chinakhov scored two third-period goals for the Blue Jackets, who dropped to 1-2-1 on their five-game road trip, which wraps up Tuesday in St. Louis. Daniil Tarasov stopped 22 of 25 shots.

The Kraken took advantage of the road-weary Blue Jackets, who lost 5-4 in overtime on Saturday in Vancouver, by tallying three first-period goals.

For the second consecutive night, Columbus allowed multiple power-plays goals. It gave up three in the third period on Saturday as the Canucks rallied from a three-goal deficit.

Eberle opened the scoring on the man advantage at 12:40 of the first, tipping Bjorkstrand’s shot from the top of the right faceoff circle inside the right post.

McCann made it 2-0 at 16:04 on a three-on-one rush, taking a pass from Eberle and ripping a shot into the net from the hashmarks on the inside of the left faceoff circle.

Eberle scored again on the man advantage at 17:58, corralling a juicy rebound off a shot by McCann and slipping a backhander between a sprawling Tarasov and the left post.

The Blue Jackets spoiled Daccord’s shutout bid at 7:12 of the third, as Chinakhov’s wrist shot from just outside the left faceoff dot deflected off a defenseman’s stick and fluttered into the net.

Chinakhov made it 3-2 at 15:58 on a blast from the high slot into the upper left corner of the net.

Blue Jackets forward Patrik Laine, who was expected to return on this trip after missing 17 games with a clavicle injury, instead entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, the league announced earlier Sunday.
