Travis Konecny has a busy night as Flyers down Jets

Travis Konecny

Travis Konecny had one goal, one assist and one fight for a Gordie Howe hat trick to lift the host Philadelphia Flyers past the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 on Thursday.

Morgan Frost and Ryan Poehling each added one goal and one assist while Tyson Foerster contributed one goal for the Flyers, who have won two in a row since the All-Star break concluded.

Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson made 28 saves.

Kyle Connor scored the lone goal for the Jets, who have lost five in a row.

The Jets played without defenseman Brenden Dillon, who was serving a three-game suspension for an illegal check against the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Noel Acciari.

Jets goaltender Laurent Brossoit stopped 17 shots.

The Jets received their third power play early in the third period when Garnet Hathaway flipped the puck into the stands for delay of game. Sean Monahan couldn’t quite get around Ersson’s pad on an open net and Winnipeg wasn’t able to generate much else.

The Flyers had a two-man advantage for 58 seconds when Jamie Drysdale was tripped at 11:49.

Winnipeg then got on the board at 14:48 when Connor scored.

The Flyers went ahead 1-0 at 3:37 of the first period when Poehling skated in and sent a crisp pass to Foerster for the tap-in.

The game soon became chippy as Konecny and Winnipeg’s Neal Pionk became entangled in a fight at 6:03.

Philadelphia took a 2-0 advantage at 14:03 when Konecny corralled a bouncing puck off Pionk and converted into the top corner of the net.

Frost ended a 10-game drought without scoring at 18:06 when he located a loose puck in front and connected for a 3-0 lead.

The Jets managed only four shots on goal, though Josh Morrissey had a stellar shot denied with 9.3 seconds remaining in the period.

Winnipeg came out aggressive to open the second period, fired a couple of shots and earned a power play at 2:22. But the Flyers took quick advantage as Poehling scored a short-handed goal seven seconds later for a 4-0 lead. It was the Flyers’ 11th short-handed goal of the season.

As the power play wound down, Monahan and Morrissey each had shots saved by Ersson.
