ATP roundup: Facundo Diaz Acosta scores upset in Buenos Aires

facundo diaz acosta

Wild-card entrant Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina made quick work of fourth-seeded countryman Francisco Cerundolo on Wednesday, earning a 7-6 (3), 6-0 victory in the second round of the IEB+ Argentina Open in Buenos Aires.

Diaz Acosta wasted little time taking down Cerundolo in front of a friendly crowd, converting all five of his break points and never trailing for the entirety of the match. He completed the sweep in just 1 hour, 38 minutes.

Third-seeded Chilean Nicolas Jarry and sixth-seeded Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry avoided the same fate as Cerundolo, with Jarry knocking off Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (5) and Etcheverry ousting Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan 6-3, 6-0.

In other action, Serbian Dusan Lajovic beat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.

Delray Beach Open

American Marcos Giron got off to a blazing start and held on for a 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1 victory over French fourth seed Adrian Mannarino in second-round action at Delray Beach, Fla.

Giron racked up 25 winners compared to Mannarino’s 16. After Mannarino drew even at 1-1 in the third set, Giron ran away with the match, winning the next five games to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will face Patrick Kypson of the United States, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over France’s Constant Lestienne on Wednesday.

No. 1 seed Taylor Fritz of the U.S. cruised past Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7-6 (5), 6-4, and Australian Rinky Hijikata pulled off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 upset of No. 6 seed Matteo Arnaldi of Italy.

ABN AMRO Open

Playing on a protected ranking, Canadian Milos Raonic had little trouble eliminating No. 8 Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, securing a 6-4, 6-4 second-round victory in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

In other second-round action, second-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev rallied to defeat Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5, while No. 5 seed Alex de Minaur of Australia earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Belgian qualifier David Goffin.

Italian No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner, third-seeded Dane Holger Rune, sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria and French wild card Gael Monfils all won first-round matches on Wednesday. Another opening-round match saw Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori push past Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No. 7 seed, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3.
