Purdue center Zach Edey will not use his fifth year of eligibility to return to the Boilermakers in 2024-25, his coach confirmed Monday.

Matt Painter told CBS Sports that this will be the 7-foot-4 senior’s final season in West Lafayette, Ind. Edey had the option to play another season based on the NCAA’s post-COVID rules.

Edey is averaging 23.7 points and 11.8 rebounds and could become the first back-to-back winner of the Naismith National Player of the Year award since Virginia’s Ralph Sampson in 1982-83.

Edey initially declared for the 2023 NBA Draft before withdrawing his name from consideration on May 31.

Edey was a consensus All-American in 2022-23 with 22.3 points, 12.9 boards and 2.1 blocks per game. The 21-year-old Toronto native has averaged 17.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 127 games (97 starts) over four seasons at Purdue.

The Boilermakers (25-3, 14-3 Big Ten) have three games left in the regular season, starting with a visit Saturday by Michigan State.
