Late surge caps Jets’ shutout of Kraken

Jets, Kraken

Mark Scheifele, Adam Lowry and Nikolaj Ehlers scored third-period goals and Laurent Brossoit earned his first shutout of the season as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the host Seattle Kraken 3-0 on Friday.

Brossoit made 17 saves, logging his fourth career shutout, as the Jets avenged a 4-3 loss to visiting Seattle on Tuesday night.

Winnipeg won for the 10th time in 13 games and moved into a tie with the Colorado Avalanche for second place in the Central Division, two points behind the Dallas Stars.

Joey Daccord stopped 29 of 31 shots for the Kraken, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

The Jets outshot the Kraken 9-8 in a goalless first period and 9-4 in a scoreless second.

Scheifele broke the tie at 7:15 of the third after a Seattle turnover. Vladislav Namestnikov got the puck to Scheifele deep on the left wing. Scheifele skated to the top of the crease, where he jammed the puck between Daccord’s pads.

Just 1:16 later, Seattle’s Andre Burakovsky had a breakaway. Scheifele made a diving attempt to break up the play, tripping Burakovsky in the process. Burakovsky’s skate grazed Scheifele in the right side of the head as he went down and the Jets forward went to the locker room for medical assistance but later returned.

Lowry, whose father, Dave, is a Kraken assistant coach, doubled the advantage at 11:28 on a third-chance rebound. Daccord stopped Mason Appleton’s initial shot from the top of the right faceoff circle and Nino Niederreiter’s close-range attempt before Lowry found the puck and tapped it into the open side of the net.

Ehlers scored into an empty net with 49.1 seconds remaining.

Jets forward Gabriel Vilardi missed his fourth straight game with an upper-body injury and is also expected to sit Saturday at Vancouver. Coach Rick Bowness said he hopes Vilardi can return when the team gets home to play the Washington Capitals on Monday.

Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn skated separately from the team Friday morning, according to NHL.com, but didn’t play. He suffered an upper-body injury on a hit from Calgary’s Martin Pospisil on Monday that led to a three-game boarding suspension for the Flames forward.

Seattle forward Jaden Schwartz went to the locker room late in the first period with an apparent upper-body injury and didn’t return.
