USWNT drops to all-time low fourth in FIFA rankings

CONCACAF San Diego

Despite winning the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup on Sunday, the United States women’s national team dropped two spots to an all-time low of fourth in the most recent FIFA world rankings released Friday.

Since FIFA began ranking women’s national teams in 2003, the U.S. had never been ranked worse than third, a spot they held after falling in the Round of 16 at last year’s Women’s World Cup.

The four-time Women’s World Cup winners — most recently in 2019 — earned a 1-0 victory over Brazil on Sunday to win the CONCACAF W Gold Cup at San Diego. But a 2-0 loss to Mexico in a group stage game earlier in the tournament led to the fall in the rankings.

Spain, which won the most recent Women’s World Cup in 2023, was ranked as the top team in the world, followed by England and France, the U.S. and Germany, in that order. Mexico moved from No. 35 to No. 31.

After Vlatko Andonovski resigned as the USWNT’s head coach following the team’s elimination in the Round of 16 at last year’s World Cup against Sweden, Twila Kilgore has been the team’s interim coach. Chelsea’s Emma Hayes is set to replace Kilgore this spring.
