Malik Monk’s OT explosion lifts Kings over Grizzlies

Kings, Grizzlies

Malik Monk scored 12 of his 28 points in overtime and added six rebounds and six assists to lead the Sacramento Kings to a 121-111 victory over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night.

Domantas Sabonis recorded 25 points and 18 rebounds for his 50th consecutive double-double as Sacramento won for the fifth time in seven games.

De’Aaron Fox added 23 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and three steals, Keegan Murray had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Harrison Barnes tallied 11 points for the Kings.

Jaren Jackson Jr. had 25 points and four blocked shots before fouling out for the Grizzlies, who fell for the 19th time in their past 24 games. Desmond Bane had 24 points and three steals, GG Jackson had 22 points and seven rebounds and Santi Aldama contributed 14 points and nine rebounds for Memphis.

Monk scored four straight baskets, fed Sabonis for a dunk and made two technical free throws during a 12-0 run in which the Kings turned a two-point overtime deficit into a 117-107 lead with 1:09 remaining.

Monk later made two free throws with 23.8 seconds left as Sacramento closed out a 16-6 edge over the extra five minutes.

The Kings lost Kevin Huerter with a left shoulder injury just 1:51 into the game. He was ruled out a short time later.

In regulation, Monk slammed home a dunk to tie it at 103 with 46.3 seconds remaining.

Bane’s left-hand layup gave Memphis a two-point lead with 33.4 seconds left. Fox answered with a tying jumper with 23.9 seconds to go.

The Kings shot 44.7 percent from the field, including 11 of 35 (31.4 percent) from 3-point range.

Jake LaRavia added 12 points for Memphis, which made 37.8 percent of its shots and was 13 of 38 (34.2 percent) from behind the arc. Luke Kennard sat out due to personal reasons.

The Grizzlies trailed by 12 points in the opening minute of the third quarter, but Memphis fought back and caught the Kings at 97 on Bane’s layup with 4:46 remaining in the fourth.

Bane scored 11 points in the third quarter but the Grizzlies were only able to trim their 10-point halftime deficit down to 84-76.
