The Baltimore Orioles placed left-handed reliever Cionel Perez on the 15-day injured list on Sunday because of a right oblique strain.
Perez, 27, had allowed a triple and a single to the two batters he faced to start the ninth inning on Saturday. He then exited the game alongside head athletic trainer Brian Ebel in the Orioles’ 13-4 win over the visiting Los Angeles Angels.
With his lone appearance in the new season, Perez has a 13-6 career record with a 3.67 ERA, four saves, 83 walks and 151 strikeouts in 161 2/3 innings in 177 relief appearances for the Houston Astros (2018-20), Cincinnati Reds (2021) and Orioles (2022-24).
In a corresponding move, Baltimore recalled right-hander Jonathan Heasley from Triple-A Norfolk. Heasley, 27, was acquired in a Dec. 18 trade with Kansas City. He went 5-11 with a 5.45 ERA, 52 walks and 85 strikeouts in 133 2/3 innings over 36 games (24 starts) for the Royals from 2021-23.
