Nats break late tie, escape with win over Giants

Nationals, Giants

CJ Abrams homered and drove in three runs, Trey Lipscomb broke a seventh-inning tie with a sacrifice fly and the visiting Washington Nationals made it two straight over the San Francisco Giants with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night.

Consecutive doubles by Jesse Winker and Riley Adams produced an insurance run in the ninth before Kyle Finnegan survived a scare in the bottom of the inning for his fourth save, helping the Nationals win a third straight after they opened 2-6.

Mike Yastrzemski singled twice and scored a run for the Giants, who didn’t have an extra-base hit and went a fourth straight game without a home run.

After a misplay in right field by Lane Thomas had allowed the Giants to draw even at 3-3 in the sixth, Winker was hit by a pitch and Adams singled to set the stage for the go-ahead run to score. Winker did so without the benefit of another hit against Giants reliever Ryan Walker (1-1), taking third on Ildemaro Vargas’ infield out before sprinting home on Lipscomb’s fly to right.

Down 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Giants loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Jung Hoo Lee and Wilmer Flores, and a walk to Jorge Soler.

But Finnegan, who had gotten the final out of the eighth, then induced two ground balls, one that forced out Lee at the plate and a second that resulted in a game-ending double play.

Abrams’ homer, his third of the season, came in the third inning after Jacob Young had singled with two outs and stolen two bases against Giants starter Kyle Harrison.

Young and Abrams teamed for another run in the fifth when Young singled, stole his third base of the night and scampered home on Abrams’ RBI single.

Nationals starter Joan Adon, subbing for injured Josiah Gray, left after four innings, having limited the Giants to one run and three hits. He walked three and struck out two.
The hosts drew even against the Washington bullpen, thanks to a wild throw by Thomas following an RBI single by Nick Ahmed. The error allowed Patrick Bailey to score the tying run all the way from first base.

Despite being charged with the two runs (one unearned), Jordan Weems (1-0) was credited with the win.

Harrison left a 3-3 tie after six innings, charged with three runs on five hits. He struck out eight and didn’t walk anyone.

Winker and Young each had two hits and scored twice for the Nationals, while Abrams and Adams added two hits apiece.

Lee joined Yastrzemski with two hits for the Giants, who outhit the Nationals 10-8.
