Nestor Cortes’ effective outing leads Yanks over White Sox

Yankees White SOx

Nestor Cortes allowed just an unearned run in seven stellar innings and the host New York Yankees continued their roll with a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night.

The Yankees matched a season high by winning five straight for the third time. New York also won for the 11th time in 13 games since dropping three of four at Baltimore from April 29-May 2.

New York sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton hit long solo homers in the first and sixth innings, respectively. Including the postseason, the Yankees are 35-4 when the pair homer in the same game.

Judge hit a 433-foot drive into the second deck in left field to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead against Chicago starter Mike Clevinger (0-2). Stanton later lifted a 417-foot shot into the left field seats off Tanner Banks for a 4-1 lead.

Judge drew three walks after hitting his 12th homer, and he scored on a double by Alex Verdugo in the fourth that snapped a 1-1 tie. Stanton added an RBI double off the top of the left field wall immediately after Verdugo’s hit.

Cortes (2-4) produced New York’s third straight start without an earned run allowed. He gave up a tying RBI single to Andrew Vaughn in the third inning, two batters after Zach Remillard reached on a throwing error by third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera.

Cortes allowed five hits, struck out six and issued one walk in a 93-pitch outing. He improved his career record to 13-3 in the Bronx after struggling through 5 1/3 innings during a 7-2 loss at Tampa Bay on May 11.

Clevinger gave up three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Tommy Pham had three of Chicago’s eight hits, including a leadoff double in the eighth when Judge tried to make a diving catch in center field. Vaughn then delivered an RBI single off Ian Hamilton, who also allowed a double to pinch hitter Gavin Sheets before being lifted.

Caleb Ferguson recorded the final two outs of the eighth, and Clay Holmes tossed a hitless ninth inning for his 13th save.
