Reds beat Dodgers to complete three-game sweep

Cincinnati Reds manager

Jonathan India and Nick Martini drove in two runs apiece as the Cincinnati Reds completed a weekend sweep and handed the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers a season-high fifth straight loss with a 4-1 victory on Sunday.

Nick Martinez (2-3) followed opener Brent Suter and allowed one hit over 4 1/3 innings for the win. Alexis Diaz relieved Carson Spiers with one out in the ninth and struck out Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages for his 10th save.

Martini had two hits for the Reds, who have won three straight for the first time since April 19-21.

The Dodgers avoided the shutout with a run in the ninth inning. Shohei Ohtani reached on a fielding error and moved to second on defensive indifference before scoring on Freddie Freeman’s one-out double against Spiers.

Los Angeles scored a total of eight runs in the three-game series while going 4-for-29 with runners in scoring position.

Cincinnati scored four runs on four singles in the third inning against Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto (5-2). With the bases loaded and one out, India singled into right field to score two runs.

India stole second base to put runners at second and third before Martini singled in two runs.

Yamamoto allowed four runs on six hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out eight while throwing 100 pitches.

The Dodgers struggled to rally against Martinez, who entered the game with a runner on and two outs in the first inning and retired Hernandez on a liner to third base.

Hernandez later doubled in the fourth and seventh innings, but was stranded in both cases.

Hernandez has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games for Los Angeles, which has gone 1-5 in its last six games at Great American Ball Park.

The game was delayed for 1 hour and nine minutes by rain before resuming at the start of the sixth inning.

Martinez lowered his career ERA against the Dodgers to 1.46 with four runs allowed across 24 2/3 innings in 11 games.

Los Angeles fell to 7-9 in its last 16 games while averaging 3.5 runs per game over that stretch.

Cincinnati third baseman Jeimer Candelario missed his second straight game with a stiff neck.
