Mets hold off Diamondbacks 10-9 for rare back-to-back wins

Starling Marte had two hits and four RBIs for the New York Mets, who ended their worst May in more than three decades by hanging on to earn a 10-9 win over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks in the second game of a four-game series Friday night.

Mark Vientos, who became New York’s starting third baseman when Brett Baty was demoted to Triple-A Syracuse earlier Friday, had three singles and two RBIs as the Mets won their final two games of the month to finish 9-19 in May — their worst record in May since the 1993 team went 9-18 on its way to finishing 59-103.

Every starter had at least one hit for the Mets, who won consecutive games for the first time since May 6-7.

The Diamondbacks, who have lost five straight to fall a season-worst seven games under .500, almost came back from a 10-5 deficit in the ninth, when Joc Pederson hit a three-run home run and Christian Walker went deep on the next pitch. Reed Garrett then struck out Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to end the game.

Pederson finished with two hits and four RBIs, while Gurriel had two RBIs.

Arizona scored three times in the first against Luis Severino (3-2). He gave up RBI singles to Pederson and Gurriel as well as a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Jake McCarthy.

But the Mets loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half against Jordan Montgomery (3-3) before Marte delivered New York’s second triple of the season and its first since April 11, a span of 44 games. Vientos followed with the go-ahead RBI single.

Francisco Lindor delivered an RBI double in the second and Pete Alonso (double), Marte (single) and Vientos (single) all had run-scoring hits in the fourth to make it 8-4.

Eugenio Suarez hit a solo homer for the Diamondbacks in the top of the sixth. J.D. Martinez responded in the bottom half by lacing a two-run homer to right to make it 10-5 Mets.

Lindor and Brandon Nimmo finished with two hits apiece.

Severino allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out four over 5 1/3 innings. The win was the first since April 17 for Severino, who was 0-1 with a 3.82 ERA in his next six starts.

Corbin Carroll had two hits for the Diamondbacks.

Montgomery gave up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings.
