Luis Torrens goes deep twice as Mets rout Nationals

Luis Torrens

Luis Torrens hit two of New York’s three home runs, Luis Severino pitched eight strong innings and the visiting Mets beat the Washington Nationals 9-1 Wednesday to complete the three-game sweep.

Francisco Lindor had two hits and went back-to-back with Torrens during a six-run sixth inning, and Harrison Bader drove in three runs with a double and a sacrifice fly.

New York, which had lost five of seven coming into the series, collected 11 hits in finishing the sweep and now travels to London for two games against the Phillies. It was New York’s first three-game sweep since April 15-17 against the Pirates.

Severino (4-2) gave up one run on seven hits. He struck out four without a walk.

Jesse Winker had two hits for the Nationals, who have lost five of six.

Washington starter Patrick Corbin (1-7) allowed six runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Torrens gave the Mets a 1-0 lead when he homered to right center with two outs in the third inning.

Tyrone Taylor tripled off Corbin in the fifth and scored on Bader’s sacrifice fly.

New York broke it open in the sixth. Torrens led off with a homer to center to make it 3-0 and Lindor followed with his 10th home run of the season.

The 28-year-old Torrens, acquired in a trade with the Yankees last week, had his first multi-homer game since 2021 for the Mariners. Torrens is making a bid to stay on the roster when starting catcher Francisco Alvarez likely returns from the injured list in the coming week.

Pete Alonso followed Lindor’s homer with a double and J.D. Martinez singled him to third with one out. Jordan Weems replaced Corbin and Mark Vientos grounded a single to left, scoring Alonso. With two outs, Bader doubled down the left-field line. Martinez scored and Vientos came all the way around, beating the relay to make it 8-0. Bader scored on a single by Jose Iglasias.

Trailing 9-0, Washington spoiled Severino’s shutout bid with three singles and a Joey Gallo sacrifice fly in the eighth.
