Tigers edge White Sox to end four-game skid

Carson Kelly hit a two-run homer and the host Detroit Tigers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night.

Detroit starter Jack Flaherty (5-4) gave up one run and five hits while striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings. Beau Brieske pitched two innings and Jason Foley got the last four outs for his 13th save.

Tommy Pham homered for the White Sox, who have lost three straight. Chicago is 5-20 against American League Central Division opponents.

Chicago’s Erick Fedde (5-2) gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings. Fedde retired the last 14 batters he faced.

The White Sox threatened with two outs in the first inning. Luis Robert Jr. walked and Gavin Sheets singled. Flaherty threw a wild pitch, allowing both runners to advance. He then struck out Andrew Vaughn.

Detroit also had a chance to score in the inning as Colt Keith singled and Mark Canha drew a two-out walk. Gio Urshela lined out to end the inning.

The Tigers took the lead in the second. Justyn-Henry Malloy smacked a one-out double before Kelly drilled his fourth homer of the season over the left field wall.

Pham singled and stole second in the top of the third, but Flaherty fanned the next three batters to keep the score at 2-0. Riley Greene, who led off the bottom of the inning with a single, was the last batter to reach against Fedde.

Pham put the White Sox on the board during his next at-bat in the fifth, blasting his fourth homer over the left field wall.

Flaherty was removed in the sixth after giving up a two-out single to Vaughn and a walk to Oscar Colas. Brieske replaced Flaherty and retired Paul DeJong on a deep fly ball.

Sheets had a bloop single off Brieske with two out in the eighth. Foley came in and set down Vaughn on a groundout.

The game ended in bizarre fashion. After DeJong was hit by a pitch with one out, pinch hitter Andrew Benintendi flied out. DeJong took off running, apparently losing track of the number of outs, and was doubled off first.
