The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Cristian Mena to make his major league debut Wednesday on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks optioned right-hander Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A Reno.
Mena, 21, is 3-2 with a 4.90 ERA over 16 starts at Reno this season. Acquired from the Chicago White Sox in February for outfielder Dominic Fletcher, Mena has made 79 starts over four minor league seasons, with 20 of those at the Triple-A level.
Mena is filling the spot in the rotation vacated when left-hander Jordan Montgomery went on the injured list this week with right knee inflammation. Mena was with the Diamondbacks in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
“It’s probably one of those really terrible secrets that we’re trying to keep from everybody,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday. “If that does come up, he deserves the opportunity.”
Hollowell, 26, was added to the Diamondbacks’ roster Tuesday but he did not pitch against the Dodgers. He had 32 relief appearances with the Colorado Rockies over the previous two seasons and posted a 6.20 ERA.
