Angels activate Luis Rengifo; Mike Trout begins rehab stint

The Los Angeles Angels activated infielder Luis Rengifo from the 10-day injured list prior to their Tuesday road game against the Seattle Mariners.

Rengifo missed 15 games due to right wrist inflammation. He was hurt while swinging the bat on July 3 against the Oakland Athletics.

Rengifo is enjoying a career-best season, batting .315 with six homers, 25 RBIs and 22 steals in 69 games. He was in the running for an American League All-Star berth prior to the injury. He has split his time between third base and second base this season, filling in for injured Anthony Rendon at the former spot.

Rengifo, 27, was slated to serve as the designated hitter while batting second against the Mariners on Tuesday.

In six seasons with Los Angeles, Rengifo is batting .254 with 53 homers, 182 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in 517 games.

The Angels designated infielder Keston Hiura for assignment in a corresponding move. Hiura, 27, batted just .148 (4-for-27) with one RBI in 10 games for Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, star outfielder Mike Trout began his rehab stint at Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday night. He struck out in his lone at-bat and played two innings in the field before exiting.

Trout last played for the Angels on April 29 when he injured his left knee. He underwent surgery to repair meniscus damage four days later.

Angels manager Ron Washington said he expects Trout to play three games in Salt Lake but the three-time American League MVP was unsure of the length of his stay. Trout is on familiar turf, as he played 20 games for the Bees in 2012.

“Take it one game at a time,” Trout told reporters pregame in Salt Lake City. “See how I am. See how I recover from playing tonight, and go from there.”

Trout wore No. 23 with BEES across his chest on Tuesday. His traditional No. 27 belongs to Salt Lake coach Jack Santora.
