diamondbacks, nationals

Eugenio Suarez belted three homers and finished with four hits, four runs and five RBIs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 17-0 pounding of the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night at Phoenix.

Gabriel Moreno had three RBIs and Jake McCarthy and Geraldo Perdomo each had three hits as Arizona matched a franchise record with 22 hits while winning for the 18th time in the past 26 games.

Ryne Nelson (8-6) allowed just two hits over seven innings for the Diamondbacks. He struck out nine and walked two.

Bryce Jarvis and Justin Martinez each pitched a scoreless inning to finish a four-hitter and wrap up Arizona’s most lopsided shutout win in franchise history.

Washington’s Patrick Corbin (2-11) was torched for 11 runs (10 earned) and 13 hits over three innings. He struck out three and walked none as the Nationals lost their third straight game and sixth in their past eight.

The power show marked the second time Suarez has hit three homers in a game. He also did so as a member of the Cincinnati Reds on Sept. 5, 2020, against the host Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ketel Marte, Moreno, Kevin Newman and Pavin Smith also had two hits apiece for Arizona.

The Diamondbacks have scored 24 unanswered runs in the series. They tallied the final seven in Monday’s 9-8 comeback victory.

Suarez hit a two-run homer in the first to get Arizona started. The Diamondbacks then scored seven times in the second against Corbin.

Perdomo had an RBI single, Moreno hit a two-run double, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added an RBI double and Suarez had an RBI single to make it 7-0. Randal Grichuk and McCarthy had RBI doubles to complete the carnage.

Marte’s RBI single and Moreno’s sacrifice fly in the third made it 11-0.

Suarez hit his second homer in the sixth inning, this one off Eduardo Salazar. Perdomo added an RBI double to make it a 13-run lead.

In the seventh, Suarez went deep against Joan Adon, his 10th homer of the month and 16th of the season.

Smith had an RBI single in the eighth to make it 15-0, and Alek Thomas added a two-run double.
