Brewers use power (Willy Adames), pitching (Colin Rea) to blank Braves

brewers

Willy Adames hit a pair of two-run homers and Colin Rea threw seven scoreless innings and struck out nine as the visiting Milwaukee Brewers hammered the Atlanta Braves 10-0 on Tuesday.

Milwaukee ending its two-game losing streak while handed Atlanta its third straight loss. It was the second straight night the Braves were shut out at home.

Adames, who was 4-for-5, homered in the first and third innings for the his multi-homer game of his career. His 19 homers tied him with Rhys Hoskins for the team lead, and his 75 RBIs were fifth-best in the National League.

Rea (10-3) became the eighth National League pitcher to reach double-digit wins. He allowed only five hits and one walk. It was the second time this season that he threw seven shutout innings.

Joe Ross pitched two scoreless innings to complete Milwaukee’s eighth shutout of the season.

The Brewers recorded 16 hits, with William Contreras getting three — a triple and two doubles. Brice Turang, Jackson Chourio, Hoskins and Joey Ortiz each added two hits apiece.

Atlanta’s Bryce Elder (2-5), recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to make the start, was knocked out after 3 2/3 innings. He surrendered seven runs on eight hits and two walks, with six strikeouts.

The Brewers wasted no time in jumping on Elder, who limited them to one run over 6 1/3 innings in his last appearance on July 30. Milwaukee struck for three runs in the first on an RBI triple by Contreras and a 426-foot homer from Adames.

Milwaukee made it 4-0 in the second when Hoskins doubled, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, and scored on Ortiz’s single.

Adames struck again in the third inning, a 415-foot shot to center field, and Turang added an RBI single in the fourth to raise the lead to 7-0.

Atlanta’s Orlando Arcia drew a walk and extended his streak of reaching base to 18 games, but Travis d’Arnaud went 0-for-4 and saw his career-best 10-game hitting streak end.
